With 8 games left in the football season the Wyoming Cowboys need to find a way to finish with a 7-5 record going at least 4-4 down the stretch to become bowl eligible. In normal circumstances 6 wins is good enough to “earn” a team a birth in the postseason but Wyoming ended up playing two lower division schools (Weber State and Texas State) and only one of those wins can be counted for bowl game purposes. This situation cam about with the last minute departures of BYU and Utah from the Mountain West leaving the Pokes a game short with very few teams with open dates. With Fresno State, Hawaii and Nevada set to join the league in the next few years the Cowboys should not be in this situation again anytime in the near future.
Looking at the games left this season the Cowboys appear to be underdogs in 5 of their remaining games and favorites in the other 3. Now all of this could change with a major injury for the Pokes or any other team left on the schedule but here is a snapshot of where things currently stand using the sagarin ratings to project the lines:
@ Utah State +10 UNLV -13
@ San Diego State +14 New Mexico -21
TCU +10 @CSU -7
@ Air Force +7
@ Boise State +28
In order for the Pokes to get to 4 wins they are going to have to pull at least one upset considering they can hold off bottom feeders UNLV and New Mexico at home and win the Border War down in Fort Collins which is a rivalry game and is always a toss-up. The two best bets for an upset would be this weekends game at Utah State and the home game versus TCU who is looking shaky at best on the defensive side of the ball. So what do you think Poke fans, will the Cowboys get to 7 wins and if they do which teams to you think are most beatable?
